Borealis

About Borealis

The 1,338-passenger Borealis is one of a pair of near identical ex-Holland America Line ships acquired by Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines in 2020 in a move that simultaneously marked the retirement of Fred.'s Boudicca and Black Watch.

Both with 690 cabins and carrying the same number of passengers and crew, Borealis was launched in 1997 as Rotterdam, the first of HAL's Rotterdam (R) class vessels. Sister ship Amsterdam, now renamed Bolette, was the fourth and last R-class vessel and both were built at Italy's Fincantieri shipyard.

Its new name was first carried by an Olsen-owned vessel in the 1940s and inspired by the Aurora Borealis. The latest Fred. ships are the largest in the line's four-strong fleet that offers a traditional style of cruising to mainly mature British passengers. Borealis will sail almost exclusively from Liverpool across the 2021 and 2022 season.

The cabins, which come in 12 categories, are located across five decks and range in size from 140 square feet to 644 square feet in the top Premier Suites. There are more than 50 single cabins, with grades ranging from Inside to Balcony Suite, along with wheelchair accessible staterooms and some cabins with bathtubs. There are also three and four-berth cabins.

All cabin categories include tea and coffee making facilities, fridge, TV entertainment system, safe and hair dryer.

In common with Bolette, Borealis also has six restaurants and 11 bars and lounges. The main restaurant spans two decks and is a classic and elegant venue with a choice of table sizes and seating options. Meals in this dining room, along with the buffet restaurant, are included in the fare and passengers can also pay a supplement to book tables in the smaller speciality restaurants.

The main entertainment venue is the two-tier show lounge and there is also live entertainment, such as music and comedy, in other bars and lounges. The ship also has a culinary theatre which hosts cookery classes and demonstrations.

Borealis also has two swimming pools -- one with a retractable roof -- a pair of hot tubs and a spa with nine treatment rooms, a hydro pool and two saunas. Outside there are tennis and basketball courts.

There are lifts to all passenger decks, a for-fee laundry service with washing collected and delivered to cabins and a self-service laundry where passengers can purchase tokens to use washing machines and dryers. There is onboard Wi-Fi and a variety of Internet packages can be purchased.

Borealis' maiden voyage will be from Liverpool for three nights on July 25.

EASTERN CARRIBBEAN CRUISE 12/29/24

We've cruised on Symphony of the Seas before so it's almost like coming back home. The staff as always was fantastic. Great service! Great smiles! Great attitudes! The 4 in our family had a wonderful time. As always, it's never long enough and on the last day it's mixed emotions.... usually depressed that we have to leave the ship. Our excursions were fun, the food was tremendous, and we all relaxed and would rate this a 5 star cruise. Can't wait until our next cruise which will make us Diamond Club Honors Members. Although we were unable to dock at some of the planned ports we still had a really great time staying on the ship or being diverted to other ports. The only thing I would suggest is that I wish our mattress had a softer mattress topper and our cabin maid was kind enough to bring us softer pillows. Excited for our next cruise!!

Wonderful ship

Our seven-day eastern Caribbean holiday cruise out of Port Canaveral on The Celebrity Equinox was an absolute blast! We booked two connecting balcony cabins, both category V1 prime verandas with state rooms on deck nine. Check-in was a breeze. We parked our car at Port Canaveral’s terminal one, paid for the entire week’s parking, and went through security. There weren’t any lines at check-in since boarding started at 10 am, which was perfect for us. Once we boarded, we were amazed by the ship’s recent refurbishment last April. Our cabins were amazing! My mom and dad loved their balcony cabin, which had the bathroom first, a sofa, and a bed right next to the balcony. It was perfect for them to enjoy their balcony after waking up in the morning. They also loved the TV that swiveled around. My grandma and I loved our balcony cabin, which had the bathroom on the right, a bed, and a sofa near the balcony. We had no complaints about the cabins, but we loved the balconies outside that we could open up to sit together on Christmas as a family. Our steward was incredible! They did a great job cleaning our rooms every night. Dining was exceptional. We ate in the main dining room and La Petite Chef for dinner. The food was delicious, and the service was great. We loved every moment of it. There were no complaints about the food. The X Club was also wonderful for me. I loved how the activities were designed for teenagers on board, and the staff did a great job. The Celebrity Equinox has truly done a great job for our family. We hope to come back to you sooner in the near future, and your staff is amazing at what they do.

Sophisticated and fun <3

Wonderful first experience on Virgin. We have cruised on Carnival (never again) and MSC (regular & Yacht Club), and this Virgin cruise was as enjoyable as the upgraded yacht club experience on MSC with even better food. We loved the comfortable, well thought out cabin layout of our sea terrace room. Service was good, only complaint was the $10.80 service fee for room delivery to stock our fridge with sodas for the voyage. We even appreciated the smart layout of the standard tiny ship bathroom, leaving most of the space for a comfortable shower stall with excellent water pressure and a much appreciated hand-held wand, in addition to the rain shower head. The biggest highlight was the amazing, sophisticated food experience, with Extra Virgin being the absolute favorite. Razzle Dazzle earned an A from us as well, the Wake was an A-, solely due to the confused and slow service. We did not care for Pink Agave, as it was high quality individual food items but no congruent meal composition and absolutely uninspired and therefore not enjoyable. We did love the foods available in the Galley, the Thai Curry Ramen was the tastiest I've ever had. So yes, we would go again, just for the comfortable cabin and food experience alone. Additionally, we appreciated the well managed crowds, there was never a bottleneck or crazy lines, getting on the ship was a breeze with priority boarding from the Splash of Romance upgrade, and walking off the ship at 7:15 am was the easiest, most uncomplicated we've ever experience (Less than ten minutes from ship to Taxi), A++! The party like atmosphere and the pretty decent DJ's were awesome, with Scarlett night being the standout best. The only area in dire need of improvement were the shows, which were abysmal. We saw several shows in the Red Room, which were not even worthy of your local community theater. We left early from the Holiday "Variety Show", and didn't even bother going to see anything the last day. It felt like zero effort was made to create quality entertainment, instead a few kids were told to put on some show, between also performing other ship duties. That was a big no-no, please work on the performances to make them less High School Musical and more Carnegie Hall to match the overall level of sophistication evident everywhere else on the ship. On another positive note, we also enjoyed the set up of the drink package. Pre-loading a set amount was easy and straight forward, drinks ranged from $9-18 for us, with an excellent selection of bottled wines for dinner ranging from $40-180. We are light drinkers and had several drinks each day without breaching the $300 mark, and all the bars and restaurant drinks were well mixed and served appealingly, aside from the Bimini Beach Club, where bartenders were stressed and could not have cared less, but the beauty of the island and club made up for the lackluster beverage experience, plus the food was, once again, better than expected and very enjoyable. Another area that could do with some improvement is the Spa, it was not only crowded and poorly managed, but also unsanitary. The layout is a large "hall" with a dry sauna, a steam room, a salt room and a mud room, with a cold pool in the middle, plus 2 tiny cold and one warm plunge tub things (literally only about 20" deep and maybe 40" across) . The heat was not well regulated in the sauna, the steam room was dangerously overheated and the mud for the mud room was located at the reception desk, outside of the spa area (?!?). The cold pool was filthy, with so much debris floating around that we stopped mid-entry and went to shower off instead, and the mini plunge tubs were also full of dirty water. Considering the amazingly well thought out amenities everywhere else on the ship, the spa was a huge let down and needs to be completely redone (Hint: take a look at MSC's thermal areas, which are to die for). We spent less than an hour in the spa, and even gave up on taking a full shower there since the attendant was extremely rude and left us waiting for over 20 minutes to even get in a shower, while a stall was open but she did not allow us to use it (?). Since the spa was part of the $230 Splash of romance package, we were disappointed but not too sore, since the best part was the priority boarding and the bottle of Moet Imperial champagne, which made us happy. We did not get the juices that were included and only one for the "treats, which were 4 Macaroons delivered on the 2nd day in the afternoon while we were napping. Depending on your priorities, the SoR add-on may be worth it, maybe. It is worth noting that Virgin uses Coca Cola products (thank you!), which are included and available via can or fountain (in the Galley). In conclusion, we will absolutely return to Virgin, probably in the Mediterranean. We felt like we finally found (almost) everything we'd ever looked for in a cruise :)
